He won’t have had long to wait. Winner of the Tourangeau Alain Christian Sangue, by unanimous decision on October 17, Yvan Mendy, 35 (45 V, 5 D, 1 N), will return to the ring on December 5, in Levallois-Perret (Hauts-de-Seine) , facing an opponent yet to be determined. This will be the last fight of the lightweight BCO Pont-Sainte-Maxence under the leadership of Brahim Asloum, who puts an end to his activity as a promoter to focus on his candidacy for the presidency of the French Boxing Federation (FFB ). The Pontois takes stock at the dawn of a still very nebulous year 2021.
Will there be a title up for grabs in your fight on December 5th?
YVAN MENDY. No Unfortunately. Given the current context, it was complicated to fight with a stake. And then, it would have been difficult to make a big preparation for a 12 rounds, knowing that I boxed a month and a half ago. Time was limited. It will be an 8 round, certainly against a South American.
In your previous fight, you said you hoped to get back into the ring quickly. It will be done …
Yes I’m happy. I’m not sure how the rest of my career will unfold, so it’s better to move on. Afterwards, I didn’t think it would be so fast! But I can’t complain because sometimes getting back into the ring can take months.
Your collaboration with your promoter, Brahim Asloum, will stop. Is this a big blow for you?
It’s a shame, obviously. The objective was to have a World Championship, and we were not far from it. With RMC Sport, he has put all the means to do this, he missed a little something. Maybe a little time, or a year 2020 without Covid-19 … But anyway, the four-year contract ended in early 2021, even if it could have been renewed. Today, Brahim is on another fight.
Because of this stop, were you afraid of not having the opportunity to compete in this famous world championship?
No, I relativize and I keep hope. The opportunities will still come. Anyway, the big names in my category, I should probably face them abroad. After that, it’s true that it’s easier to defend your interests when you’re part of a promotion. Alone, it’s impossible to compete. Thanks to RMC and Brahim, I also gained visibility. My name has gained weight.
Do you plan to turn to another promoter?
I haven’t really thought about it yet. It begins to be known that this is the last gala of Brahim Asloum. I think the promoters will come, I am still quite bankable at European level. I hope that will move in the months to come.
I am aware of having passed through the back door
Why did you recently post a message on social media asking for the chance to face the best lightweight on the planet?
I wanted to mark the spirits. In reality, it was more directed towards the federations. I’m aware of having passed through the back door, but they have to reckon with the little guy from Pont. I have been eligible for a World Championship for years. What are they waiting for ?
In this post, you regretted being “the forgotten name” …
Globally, this is the case. Because when I got into the pro ranks, I had a pretty average amateur record, and I wasn’t an Olympic medalist either. In addition, I am French, and our sport is not very popular with us. If I had been English things would probably be different. However, we have nothing to envy them in terms of level. I don’t have any complexes.
How do you see the year 2021?
I remain optimistic. I hope it will get better, both in terms of health and sport. I’m also in a hurry, of course. Anyway, this has to be my year. I’m almost 36 years old, I still feel so fit, but there are things I need to pay more attention to, like sleep. There shouldn’t be a physical decline, or the weariness of biding my time …
