Covid-19: Portugal in partial containment from Wednesday

Contagion is spreading all over Europe. The time of this single Saturday evening, here is that England and Portugal have joined the increasingly long list of territories in which the restrictions aimed at stemming the spread of Covid-19 have been strengthened. From next Wednesday, partial containment will come into force, Prime Minister Antonio Costa has indicated. It will concern around 70% of the population.

“The time has come when it is necessary to take more restrictive measures […] to control this pandemic ”, declared the head of the socialist government at the end of an extraordinary council of ministers devoted to the health crisis.

Europe, third epidemic focus in the world

European countries are now the third most affected region in the world, behind Latin America and the Caribbean (11.2 million cases) and Asia (10.5). Globally, more than 45.6 million human beings have been affected, of which nearly 1.2 million have lost their lives.

The United States has recorded more than 94,000 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest figure since the start of the pandemic, according to a count from Johns Hopkins University. They are the most affected country in terms of both deaths and cases, with 229,710 deaths for 9,048,177 recorded cases.

On Friday, however, President Donald Trump again downplayed the severity of Covid-19, from which he himself recovered. “We just want a return to normalcy,” he said. “If you catch it, you’ll be better, and then you’ll be immune,” he told crowds in Michigan, where he was campaigning for re-election.
