Diego Maradona underwent successful surgery on Tuesday for a bruise on his head, five days after celebrating his sixtieth birthday. “The hematoma was successfully evacuated. Diego tolerated the surgery well. He is awake and everything is fine, ”announced his doctor, Dr Leopoldo Luque, surgeon at a private clinic located in Olivos, north of Buenos Aires.
The former Barça and Naples star was admitted on Monday for examinations at a private clinic in La Plata, 60 km south of the capital. His doctor, Dr Leopoldo Luque, had presented the operation as a “routine operation”, recalling that the former Argentine president Cristina Kirchner had undergone the same during his mandate.
“He’s an elderly patient with a lot of pressures in his life. This is a time when we must help him. It’s very difficult to be Maradona, ”added the doctor. As soon as the Argentinian star was hospitalized, he had ruled out any link with the coronavirus epidemic which has hit Argentina hard.
Asked if the hematoma could have been the result of a stroke, the doctor said “patients generally don’t remember” what could have been the cause. “These are imperceptible bruises,” he stressed.
Diego Maradona, technical director of the La Plata club, insisted on leading the training of his players on Friday, his birthday. But he walked with difficulty and had only been on the pitch for a few minutes before retiring with the help of his assistants.
