For almost a year now, we’ve gotten into the habit of wearing the mask. Billions of men, women and children wear this mask around the world in an attempt to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, this affects facial recognition systems traditional. Fortunately, the Japanese firm NEC has just had a brilliant idea!

A new facial recognition system

Facial recognition systems are a little disrupted by the wearing of masks around the world. But in Japan, people have been wearing masks for a long time, long before the arrival of Covid-19 in our lives. And as a result, Japanese companies have taken a step ahead of facial recognition.

Because the habit has been installed in the daily life of the Japanese for quite some time. The Japanese company NEC has just presented its facial recognition system which is effective even with the world wearing the mask. We learn that the system is 99.99% reliable. How is it possible ? Well quite simply because the software only focuses on the uncovered part of the face.

A reliable tool

To verify the identity of a person, the NEC system therefore mainly focuses on the eyes. However, for this tool to work, the person must have been previously registered in the software, which is an important limit to its use. Shinya Takashima, deputy director of NEC’s digital platforms division, broke the silence to explain the usefulness of his company’s tool: “ The needs for such technology have increased dramatically due to the context generated by the coronavirus. So we decided to introduce this technology to the market “.

For the moment, the Japanese firm has not given the price of its new system. But it looks like the tool is already on pre-order in many parts of the world. We must admit that this system seems promising and could provide many services to the authorities who can no longer count on other facial recognition systems …
