Salad of organic green beans, hake with chive sauce, green cabbage and potatoes, custard and compote… This Monday, the day of the start of the school year in Lyon, the 29,000 young Lyonnais who attend school canteens, were surprised to see each other serve a unique menu. A semi-surprise in reality, so much, the choice of the town hall to serve, for health reasons, a single menu without meat has unleashed a political controversy since its announcement four days ago.
But what do those first concerned think? At the Victor-Hugo school, in the 1st arrondissement, this new organization does not seem to move families. Nina, in CM1, says “always choose the menu without meat”. A personal choice of the girl. “We eat meat at home, but Nina eats very little. She always prefers the menu with egg and fish, explains Elise, her mother. Nina would have been very annoyed if we had left the only menu with meat in the canteen. She would have left it aside. “
Elise has difficulty understanding the controversy that thrives to the top of the state on the menus of Lyon canteens: “Frankly, I find this case regrettable. It is indeed the wisest choice that has been made. This mother of a family conceives all the less controversy as in May and June, the children had been subjected to the same regime for the same health reasons. “But at the time, they just called him light menu “.
At the Robert-Doisneau school, also in the 1st arrondissement, the same position of Amandine, mother of two children in nursery and primary. “It’s really a false problem, we must not politicize this matter. The only question is the quality of the meat, and so far the meat is not good, the children do not eat it ”, regrets Amandine.
“An ideological position”
Opinions are however quite divided. Marion, mother of a little boy in first grade, is rather recovered. “What bothers me in this matter is that this meatless menu is imposed on us. It is wrong to claim that it takes longer to prepare and reheat a menu with meat, than with eggs or fish, for me it is clearly an ideological position ”, asserts the mother of the family, who recommends “a single menu, of course, but with meat every other day”.
Same opinion for Alice, whose two children are enrolled at Lamartine school, in the 2nd. “We were not consulted,” regrets the young woman, denouncing “a coup by environmentalists”. “Ideology should not enter schools,” she said.
In Lyon, on the first day of the introduction of the meatless menu, parents of students, opposed to this measure, have already gathered to prepare a summary suspension that they are preparing to file before the administrative court.
While the children are eating their hake with chives, a long line of tractors and trucks has set up to block traffic on the Quai du Général-Sarrail. “Are we going to deprive children of locally produced meat and bring in vegetable proteins from South America?” »Indignant Pascal Girin, president of the FDSEA of the Rhône. Received at the town hall, the breeders, worried about their outlets, were assured that the measure was only temporary.
