The associations of supporters of the Blues will be present at the Stade de France, this Tuesday evening (8:45 p.m.) for the last match of the year, against Sweden. But only in the form of banners of their group installed in stands. Football has been played behind closed doors again for a month. Yannick Vanhée, the president of the Corsairs association, recounts the feelings of frustration and hope that are jostling among the 250 members of this group born in Dunkirk (North) and more widely among the community of fans of the Blues.
How did you experience, from a distance, the last victory of the Blues in Portugal (1-0)?
YANNICK VANHEE. I’m kidding, but we’re in a lot of trouble. We are used to traveling a lot and we had everything planned before the story of the Covid. We had to finish this year with a nice trip to Portugal. Victory lifts my spirits a bit, but going abroad is our annual vacation. There are about thirty or forty for each meeting in Europe. In the group, the members are disgusted and frustrated. We can not do otherwise…
How do you maintain the link?
I regularly send emails. We organized a prediction contest for the last two games. We are active on social networks and there are a lot of video exchanges between each other, small groups in the group. We do not organize a gathering to see the matches, we are not fools. We are called to evacuate the lack.
Were you among the rare supporters present during the last “open” matches at the Stade de France?
Yes. We were 13 against Portugal (Editor’s note: 0-0, at home, October 11)… We were very happy to travel from Dunkirk, to have a drink, to go to a restaurant. It does a lot of good, but unfortunately it was a bit ridiculous. It doesn’t make sense to be 1000 out of 80,000. Somehow I prefer there to be nothing. It creates even more frustration.
How do you see the Euro, after having to cancel your plans last summer?
Plane tickets have been re-booked. We were optimistic when we did it a few months ago. Last summer, around 100 people planned to go to Budapest (Hungary), for example. For Munich (Germany), it was easier, with a large bus and the rest by car. Even if some people lost a little money, we could have had a lot of date changes, credits or refunds. For 2021, we took accommodation with free cancellation and flights on low cost companies. And the places, we already have them.
Are you worried that the competition will be canceled or moved?
We have to hold on to something. We’re not going to be brooding, otherwise we’re bad. Afterwards, we know that already in a country, it is complicated. So in twelve different … But part of the brain still believes in it. Today, obviously, we say to ourselves that we are sweet dreamers. I read that the competition could take place in Russia or England. We tell ourselves why not ? We are ready to act.
We imagine that you have checked the dates for the Final 4 of the League of Nations, in October 2021?
Either way, we’ll be there! The best for us who come mostly from the North would be to see the sun of Italy. If it’s the Netherlands, it’s three hours by bus… And if not, why not discover Poland? We remain optimistic, we want to relive. But we all have people around us who got this crap, and some who left. We want to stay serious.
Do you keep the link with the France team?
We have a referent at the FFF (French Football Federation), Maxime, who we are close to. We have links but we can’t organize anything. We talked to put our tarps in the empty stadium. After the match against Sweden, we should have a video meeting to take stock of this year and motivate the troops. We are not well in the heads. I put myself in the place of all the supporters of the France team. It’s unheard of and it’s catastrophic, but it’s no one’s fault… So we just want to be careful and get back to good health as soon as possible.
