His word was expected. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin spoke optimistically about the organization of Euro 2020, postponed to 2021 (June 11 to July 11), with spectators despite the Covid pandemic -19. He imagines it with the public and throughout Europe (12 countries selected) as planned.
“For the moment, we are planning the Euro exactly as we wish,” he announced on Tuesday to the German site Sportschau.de, of public television ARD. If you had asked me in February if I was ready for a pandemic that brings the world to a halt, I would have thought you were crazy. But now we are well prepared, we are smarter and stronger than last year, because we know anything can happen. “
And to add: “We are thinking about solutions without fans, or with 30%, 50%, 70% (Editor’s note: stadium occupancy). In theory, we could organize the Euro in twelve, eleven, ten, three countries or even just one. We can do it, if we want to. “
The idea of this unprecedented Euro, imagined by Michel Platini, his predecessor, does not however delight the current boss of the European body: “Symbolically, it’s very pretty, but for us it’s not easy, regardless of the pandemic. We are not very happy about it. It’s a big challenge, but I’m sure the Euro will take place next year. ” And if we had to do it again? “I don’t think I would support this idea again.”
