Ligue 1: Frédéric Antonetti back on the bench in Metz
Frédéric Antonetti takes his place on the bench in Metz, according to information from Canal +, delivered by Hervé Mathoux on Sunday evening during “Canal Football Club” – a program for which Antonetti was the consultant in 2017 and 2018, while he was looking of a club. The Corsican coach will lead the training of the Grenats from this Tuesday and will lead them to Angers in the league on Sunday, as part of the 7th day of Ligue 1 (3 p.m.).
“Twenty-three months after returning to Corsica from where he had served as general sports manager of FC Metz, Frédéric Antonetti resumed his post as head coach of the professional team on Tuesday,” wrote the club in a press release this Monday evening.
Arrived in Lorraine in May 2018 while FC Metz was in Ligue 2, this very famous coach, 59 years old, passed notably through Bastia, Saint-Etienne, Nice, Rennes and Lille, had taken a step back from mid-December to stay in Corsica at the bedside of his wife Véronique, suffering from a long illness – she died in early July.
“When Frédéric wished in December 2018 to take a step back to accompany his wife, we had agreed together that he would return to his place as coach of the team when he felt that it was the right moment,” declared President Bernard Serin in the club press release. Today, it is therefore simply the natural continuation of this system: Frédéric is once again becoming the head coach of our team. ”
During the 2018-2019 season which will see Metz crowned L2 champion and promoted, Antonetti has indeed coached remotely and took the title of general manager in May. During the second part of the season, he relied on his co-trainer Vincent Hognon, who arrived in Metz from Nancy in August 2018, and on Jean-Marie De Zerbi, his longtime assistant.
Appointed the only head coach last season, Hognon, still assisted by De Zerbi, obtained the maintenance in L1 (15th). Author of a decent start this season, 15th with 7 points after six days, Hognon, 46 years old (a former player of Antonetti in Saint-Etienne and Nice), integrated into the Metz staff at the latter’s request, “made the choice not to resume his position as assistant coach ”and left the club, according to the latter’s press release.
De Zerbi, 60, had preceded him in the offseason, motivating his departure by “personal and family reasons”, while he had a year left on his contract.
More present in Metz since this summer, Corsica had followed the preparatory matches of FC Metz at the end of July. Almost two years after having entrusted them to a third party, Antonetti, under contract until June, takes over alone the reins of the Lorraine team but returns to familiar ground.
