“Oh Dimitri! Go ahead, take the wheel! This is the kind of remarks that come to the attention of Dimitri Boudaud, as long as the bus driver struggles to make a maneuver. In practice, the 33-year-old would have no trouble complying. Elected best player in Dunkirk by supporters last season in the National (9 goals, 5 assists), the attacking midfielder from Charleville-Mézières (Ardennes), has long been a bus driver, alongside football.
In the spring, after ten years of juggling his passion and his livelihood, he was offered the professional contract that he had always refused. Especially in Sedan, where he was trained but considered too little athletic (1.73 m) to pass the course.
“When I arrived in Dunkirk, lack of pot, we went down to CFA 2, he said. I was morally sealed but I decided to invest myself on the spot. The president at the time, Jean-Christophe Géhin, ran an urban transport company attached to Véolia transport. The 2nd guard, Mickaël Witse, who worked there, presented me with the advantages: CDI, 13th and 14th months, 8 weeks leave, a good CE … I was 23 years old and four years of CFA, I saw that in the football, it was complicated. An agent was supposed to place me in Ostend in Belgian D2, without success. I was a little disgusted. So, I started… ”
“I sometimes arrived at training in a shirt and tie after my shift”
Vaillant, Dimitri Boudaud, qualified at the level of bac + 2, undertakes a one-year work-study training in Lille, every other week, sanctioned by the driver’s CAP. Once the holder of the D license and his signed CDI, Dimitri takes service. “For example, I worked from 4 am to 1 pm,” he says. After the service, I immediately went to a nap. Waking up was complicated, I had to get back to work out around 4 p.m. In the evening, I went to bed at 10 p.m. maximum. At half-time in a Champions League match, I often went to bed during the break… In 2012, I met my wife who, on some evenings, didn’t see me much. “
In the locker room, Dimitri stands out: “My partners had a little room at the start. The look was a bit younger but I sometimes arrived at training in a shirt and tie after my shift, in navy and sky blue tones… Not so long ago, Billy Ketkeophomphone ( Editor’s note: the center-forward of Dunkirk who experienced the L1 with Angers ) didn’t want to believe that I was a bus driver two months ago. “
Off the field, the double hat is good and bad. Thanks to his job, he bought an apartment, then a house when he was married with children: “So many things that a simple National or CFA player cannot do, with contracts only running for a year or of them. “
“This contract is the culmination of a career”
“When driving, I sometimes had to ask customers to take a break from the conversation,” he continues. Otherwise, they would stay talking about football during the whole shift… And then, a lot of interviews really made me look like the basic amateur, whereas I have devoted my life to football! »Once Dunkirk settled in National (2013), Dimitri saw his working time decrease and since July 2, he is a full-time pro, for one season.
“For me, who is coming to the end, this contract is a bit the culmination of a career,” says Dimitri. Everyone has their own path. I have no bitterness at all. Playing only football is a much more comfortable pace of life, believes Dimitri who has always made sure to enrich his background – coaching certificate (BEF), university degree (DUGOS) – and intends to continue. “I have not doubled my salary but I earn a good living, he says. To play football, it’s already extraordinary. “
To his two little boys, Eden and Lounès, who really liked taking a bus tour, he had to explain that daddy’s job now was football.
