Not everyone succeeds in being both in the presidential office at the Elysee Palace and in that of the mayor of Paris. This is the case of the American artist Shepard Fairey. Also known as Obey, he was the one who painted the portrait of Barack Obama and his famous “Hope” and the “Yes We Can” poster.
Since 2017, a canvas version of a stylized Marianne made by the artist in the aftermath of the 2015 terrorist attacks sits in the office of Emmanuel Macron. The French had notably discovered the work during a presidential interview and during the wishes of December 31, 2017. And now, for a few months, another work of the street artist adorns the office of Anne Hidalgo at the Town Hall.
If the mayor made this choice, it is obviously out of a taste for Obey’s work. But we can not help but see an amused nod to the Elysee Palace – at a time when the relatives of the mayor of Paris are organizing to push for his candidacy in 2022. The entourage of Anne Hidalgo prepares networks and feedback, with the Ideas in Common platform. The main interested party wants to be sure that a space exists for her. “She will hesitate but surely will not go, wants to believe a close friend of Emmanuel Macron about a candidacy, because she has a lot to lose in the battle”. Anne Hidalgo will not say anything about her intentions until September. As if, in his office, Obey’s work reflected his state of mind: in particular, we see an open book bearing the mention “The Future Is Unwritten” … the future is not written.
