After two victories in the first two motorcycle Grands Prix of the season in Spain, we thought Fabio Quartararo was on the way to a world title that was reaching out to him. Despite a third success in Barcelona, the young Yamaha rider, 21, then lost in consistency like his fall this Sunday in Valencia on the 9th lap. He left the victory in the championship to the Spaniard Joan Mir (Suzuki) much more consistent (7 podiums, one victory) than the Niçois (no podium apart from his three successes). Former rider Randy de Puniet (140 motorcycle GP to his credit), now a consultant on Canal +, analyzes the Frenchman’s season. With one race from the end of the season, the French are now 5th in the general classification as last year.
How to explain that after two initial successes, Quartararo loses the thread of its season?
RANDY DE PUNIET. The season begins in Jerez where he has always been at the top as well as his bike. He arrived motivated as never after confinement. On the same track, he continues four days later. He did not leave the paddock to stay in his bubble without finding himself in the spotlight. Then there was a three week break, and the return to normal life …
That is to say ?
In contact with the outside world and those around him, he realized what he had done and which was already exceptional. But on the recovery in the Czech Republic (Editor’s note: a sign of the nascent passion for the Niçois, Canal + recorded its best audience of the season that day with 906,000 viewers against an average of 697,000) is more complicated and he finishes 7th. Where last season he made podiums (Editor’s note: 7) this time he finished 6th or 7th. Not doing what he was doing the year before took a toll on his morale. In Barcelona, he is untouchable. It’s the best race of his life. He doubles, he is combative. But after nothing…. He won three races but outside only scored 5 and a half points per race. It’s not enough. It’s all or nothing. It is not a performance of champion whereas during his victories he literally stuns the competition. In the end, it is very surprising and paradoxical.
Psychologically Quatararo will therefore have to work …
Yes I think everyone has seen it. Afterwards, Fabio has an enormous quality, his ability to erase bad memories in order to concentrate again on a new goal. But at the moment, he has a series of poor performances and can not get his head out of the water. This winter he will have to take stock of all that.
There was also this sanction at the GP of Emilia-Romagna in September. We saw him, then, very affected by the decision of the stewards who deprived him of a podium.
We debated it at length on the plateau. It was not for him to go and see the race directors (Editor’s note: the Frenchman had received a 3-second penalty at the end of the race for having exceeded the limits of the track on the last lap). We should have stopped him. The image given is bad, that of a capricious child. At this level, it is not good. If you’re pissed off, you’ll pull over in your truck for ten minutes and calm down. He is very emotional.

How to qualify your season? Encouraging or disappointing?
He won three races in a magnificent way, we will not take that away from him, but otherwise it is disappointing. In the end, he can do less well than last season (5th) in the general classification. Fabio missed out on his confirmation season. Too bad because a French driver at this level has not been since Christian Sarron (Editor’s note: in the 1980s).
