Former midfielder Jean-François Charbonnier, French champion with Paris SG in 1986, died on Monday following a long illness at the age of 61. Born in Lyon on January 18, 1959, Charbonnier began his professional career in Reims (1978-1984) before joining PSG where he was under contract for seven years (1984-1991). He played 151 games in the Paris jersey, scoring 15 goals and delivering an assist.
This versatile midfielder notably participated in the capital club’s first French title in 1986 under the direction of Gérard Houllier. After a loan to AS Cannes during the 1986-1987 season where he was one of the architects of the accession to D1 of the Riviera club, Charbonnier returned to PSG before joining Paris FC (1991-1997) . He then joined the technical support of Paris FC and Créteil before returning to Lyon where he was the coach of several amateur clubs in the region. He has coached Chasselay (2004-08), FC Corbas (2008-11), FC Vaulx (2011-12), CS Ozon (2012-2014) and AS Craponne (2015), with several promotions to his active.
Charbonnier had finally taken the reins in the summer of 2019 of CS Neuvillois and had succeeded in his first season to pocket the rise in Regional 2 (7th Division) before stepping back and leaving control of the first team.
