Fighting a sedentary lifestyle, supporting the sick through the practice of physical activity… The Minister for Sports, Roxana Maracineanu, has made health sport one of her priorities.
How could we define healthy sport?
ROXANA MARACINEANU. Healthy sport is a tailor-made sport practice, a physical activity suitable for practitioners with or without pathologies. For example, an overweight person will need special attention to avoid overexertion of the support or cardiovascular system. A sports health educator will therefore advise her on the pace and intensity of the practice. Another example, after breast cancer, you can practice fencing to regain arm mobility with trained fencing masters.
With the health crisis, we realize that sport has a role to play for health …
It is obvious. The health crisis is a powerful reminder that sporting activity is absolutely essential for our physical and mental well-being. This pandemic also shows that the famous comorbidities which weaken many French people in the face of this virus could be combated more effectively through regular physical activity. Today, we know that sport is an effective non-drug response for many pathologies. We also see that a sedentary lifestyle has gained ground due to confinements and that regular physical activity is a real emergency.
Is society realizing that it is necessary to practice physical activity, even after 60 years?
This awareness is old, but for it to become concrete, we need trained actors, political will and resources. The lengthening of the lifespan and the desire to bring back the age of dependency are reflected in the interest of mutuals, insurances, nursing homes to make sport a tool for better living and aging. We have also signed agreements with several mutuals to promote support for adapted physical activity. The Ministry of Sports is also carrying out important work with that of Higher Education to develop the training of sports educators specializing in adapted physical activity, in close collaboration with the federations.
What are the challenges of sports-health houses?
The usefulness of the sports-health center is to connect patients who need physical activity in their care path or even people who have never or little done sport with professionals to support them. . It is an airlock towards the resumption of sport with professional medical and sporting support. Sports-health houses are a platform that brings together sports associations, health establishments, nursing homes, doctors … My goal is also that, after their passage in sports-health center, these audiences integrate sustainable sport in their daily lives with sports associations where they will find the activity that suits them best.
Who are the devices intended for?
Really for all audiences, but we are particularly targeting the 6 million French people who suffer from a long-term illness and a very large part of whom can be prescribed by their doctor for appropriate physical activity sessions. We also note the arrival of patients who have contracted Covid-19 and use health sports to help them regain their full respiratory capacities.
