Republicans have a messaging problem. On January 5, two key senatorial elections in Georgia will decide the color of the future Senate. Donald Trump’s party must win at least one to keep a majority in the upper house and block the program of President-elect, Democrat Joe Biden. We must therefore mobilize all potential Conservative voters. Problem: Donald Trump lost the presidential election and has been crying out for massive fraud for almost a month. To date, only 27 Republicans in Congress have recognized Joe Biden’s victory. The discredit cast on the American electoral system is such that some within his own camp go so far as to call for a boycott of the second round in Georgia. A disaster scenario for a Grand Old Party caught in its own trap.
Well aware of the problem, the billionaire came Saturday night to the rescue of the two Republican senators who are trying to keep their seats: David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. As during the presidential campaign, he landed Air Force One at the small airport in Valdosta, Georgia, and held a rally in front of a crowd of worshipers whom he asked to vote on January 5. But the outgoing president also did what many feared: for two hours, in front of his white-hot supporters, he repeated that the Democrats had stolen the victory, dubious examples and far-fetched videos in support. Worse, he once again took it personally to the governor of Georgia and his secretary of state in charge of elections, both Republicans, for having allowed the certification of the local victory of Joe Biden.
“The vote is corrupted, it doesn’t help much”
Attacks likely to comfort those who believe that the dice are loaded whatever they do. “The vote is corrupt, so it’s not much use,” explains a user on the social network “Speak”, an alternative to Twitter and new rallying point for the MAGA galaxy (Make America Great Again, the slogan of Donald Trump). This is the kind of reasoning pushed by certain free electrons in the Republican Party, such as lawyer Lin Wood, close to the conspiracy QAnon movement. Or his colleague Sidney Powell, who worked for a time in the legal team of the Trump campaign, responsible for contesting the results, before being dismissed because of his too smoky theories … even to the taste of the boss.
According to these two conservatives more Trumpist than Trump, the governor of Georgia would have participated in the so-called plot offering victory to the Democrat via electronic manipulation. “Why go back to vote in another rigged election?” Lin Wood asked at a rally last Wednesday. As for Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, in their eyes they would not deserve to be re-elected because they would not support Donald Trump enough in public. A die-hard logic that risks doing damage in early January.
New balancing act
What to do in any case explode Newt Gingrich, a Republican tenor close to the outgoing president: “Lin Wood and Sidney Powell are totally destructive. Every conservative in Georgia who cares about America MUST vote in the second round. Their boycott strategy will put America in ruins, ”denounces the former Georgia elected official.
Others on the right laugh yellow, like Georgia commentator Erick Erickson, who jokingly accused the two lawyers of being undercover agents for the Democratic “deep state”. Even Donald Trump, who needs Republican support, had to resolve on Saturday to a balancing act that does not resemble him. Crying out “fraud” in a “rigged” electoral system, while urging voters in Georgia to mobilize to elect two Republican Senate candidates.
“We can fight for the presidency and fight to elect our two formidable senators, and we can do it at the same time,” he urged. But the billionaire is well aware of the danger posed by Lin Wood, Sidney Powell and those who follow them. He resigned himself to making a phone call to these overzealous supporters… to ask them to buckle up.
