It is done: the municipal council of Tourcoing approved on Saturday the payment of 20,000 euros to the animal protection association. This sum corresponds to unaffected indemnities: Gérald Darmanin had remained mayor of the city of the North since his re-election, last March, until mid-September.

According to a report appearing in the minutes of this municipal council, available on the website of the town hall, “the non-payment of the mayor’s allowance to Gérald Darmanin from May 23 to September 6, 2020 generated an envelope of the order of 20,000 euros ”.
“Decidedly there is no lack of nerve #Darmanin to accuse the opposition of political politics by defending a deliberation which he decided to make a coup to his personal credit already 6 months ago. Nb: we did not wait for you to defend animals, ”reacted, also on Twitter, his environmental opponent Katy Vuylsteker.
Minister LREM became mayor of Tourcoing again on May 23, returning to a seat occupied between March 2014 – when the young elected then stamped UMP had delighted the city to the PS – and September 2017.
Gérald Darmanin did not resign from his post of mayor until September 2020, becoming a simple municipal councilor.
According to the case law established by Lionel Jospin in 1997, a minister cannot lead a local executive. This is an unwritten rule – which has suffered exceptions (Le Drian, Sarkozy …) – but the former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe had sanctified it in September 2019.
