Summary :
Valéry Giscard d’Estaing was buried on Saturday October 5 on the grounds of his residence in Authon (Loir-et-Cher), in the strictest privacy. A discreet farewell for a former head of state who feared not to be loved by the French.
He was only 48 years old when he was elected to succeed Georges Pompidou in May 1974. The youngest president of the Fifth Republic blows a wind of reforms on France: right to abortion, majority at 18, dismantling of the ORTF… He wants to give the image of a modern president and close to his fellow citizens.
But his seven-year term did not escape crises: the break with his Prime Minister Jacques Chirac, the inexorable rise in unemployment, or the famous “Bokassa diamond affair”. VGE remained bruised by its defeat in 1981 against François Mitterrand.
Henri Vernet, journalist in the political service of Le Parisien, recounts the “Giscard years” in Code Source.
